RadioApp was born when it became clear that smartphones had become the centerpiece of personal entertainment, with 90% of the Australian population owning one, and using them to consume media – from music to movies; podcasts to videos.
The availability of this variety of entertainment posed a threat to radio. With radio no longer dominating the areas of traditional consumption, such as car or home, radio listenership via FM and AM continues to decrease in younger demographics to make way for new entertainment platforms.
While radio already enjoyed a presence in the smartphone space; owing to individual station apps, their existence didn’t really match with how consumers use their smartphones for entertainment. The user experience was unfriendly, requiring you to shut down and open new apps just to station surf!
In addition, non-radio audio competitors are increasingly prolific with messaging and user interface design targeted at smartphone users – and individual station apps are not.
All this led to the realisation that an accessible, user friendly app was needed that would recreate the simplicity of listening to radio; in an environment compelling enough to have users come back time and time again to keep radio relevant for smartphone users.
Our response was to create RadioApp – a new app that focuses on simplicity and beauty, with an emphasis on creating a user friendly experience.
RadioApp delivers on these objectives by allowing users to listen to more than just one station within the app- with just one tap; crafting a design aesthetic that took full advantage of the smartphone and smartwatch environment, de-cluttering the app to allow content to be the star, and reflecting true radio listening habits of switching between both stations and broadcasters.
With RadioApp, not only can users play radio stations on launch, they can dip in and out of a variety of stations, from all of Southern Cross Austereo’s stations; to ABC, Fairfax Radio and SBS radio stations – with more joining the app in the near future.
Featuring a vibrant and content focused visual interface, and smart features such as the display of “Recently Played” playlists visible with just one touch, users enjoy seamless listening.
Plus, added Apple Watch functionality allows a user to very easily control the radio coming through their earphones while on the go and away from their smartphone leading to a response time that’s quicker than any other radio listening app can deliver.
It all adds up to a simple, beautiful app that brings radio up to the minute.
